Have you ever had requirements to do more with maps than you can achieve with the out of the box Power BI visuals? The Icon Map custom visual was created to fill these feature gaps, and enable more advanced capabilities, such as drawing images, lines and polygons on maps. James will walk us through demos showing the features and how to configure them.

James Dales is the Global Capability Lead for Power BI at Avanade and is a Microsoft FastTrack Recognised Solution Architect. As a Microsoft Data Platform MVP he is the co-leader of the London Power BI user group. In 2019 he became the first member of the Power BI Contributors Program, working alongside the Microsoft engineering team to build new functionality into the product itself. He has a keen interest in spatial analytics and is the author of the Icon Map custom visual.

Greetings P3 Nation! I’m here today to talk about maps, maps, globes, charts, topographical representations, and…well frankly I’m out of map synonyms.

However there’s at least twice as many ways to visualize data with maps in Power BI as there are ways for me say the word map! I wonder how many times I can get the word map in this post…I’ll basically be an certified cartographer by the time I’m done writing this.
